I have been making knives out of railroad spikes for years. I volunteer time at a pioneer historical village, where I work in the blacksmith shop (and also the print shop and depot). The village is located at Farmington, MN. (www.dakotacity.org).

I made many knives for persons who reenact historical time periods, and want a period appropriate knife. Railroad spikes also have a rather high carbon content, so that they can be sharpened to a good edge and they will retain their sharpness for a long time.

I have also used spikes to make gardening tools and even hatchets. We regularly display how blacksmiths would reuse metal items to make new items.
